Important information for External Students entering for University of London examinations

  • UOL Examinations are held in the UK and world-wide at Overseas Examination Authorities (please refer to the list of Overseas Authorities given in the Course Regulations for your subject).
  • Most examinations are in the form of three-hour written papers; some include course-work which counts towards final assessment.
  • Irrespective of mode or place of study or examination, External Students who are awarded degrees and other awards will have attained the same academic standard as students studying at a College of the University of London in London.
  • Students who have passed an examination are not permitted to re-enter the examination in order to achieve a better result.

Register for an examination

  • Before making entry to an examination, you must have followed a prescribed period of study as a registered student please read carefully through the relevant sections of the current Regulations concerning "Initial Registration", "Examinations" and "Entry to Examinations", paying particular attention to the deadlines for the receipt of entry forms.
  • In order to register for an examination, you must complete an examination entry form, indicating clearly the subjects in which you wish to be examined.
  • It is crucial that you submit your examination entry form by the deadlines for examination entry.
  • If you are sitting the examination overseas, you should request the appropriate entry form from your chosen Overseas Examination Authority and return the completed form to that Authority (not the University) for onward transmission to London.
  • Please note that Overseas Examination Authorities' deadlines for the return of completed entry forms are usually set well in advance of the University deadlines.
  • If you are sitting the examination in London, your completed entry form must be submitted to the relevant Examinations Office by the deadline for the receipt of entries at the University.
  • If you follow the procedures set out above, you will be entered for the examination and receive an Admission Notice/Timetable approximately two weeks before the start of the examinations. Provisional starting dates are set out in the Course Regulations for your subject.

Payment of Examination Entry Fee

  • Please check section "Fees and Refunds" of your current Course Regulations for examination fees payable to the University.
  • If you are sitting the examination at a centre in the UK and Eire (other than London) or overseas, you may also have to pay a local fee to the Examination centre.
  • Please note that examination entry fees are not refundable or transferable to another year if you are unable to attend the examination.

Writing the examination

  • You should attend the examination at the starting times notified to you by your Examinations Authority, even if this differs from that given on your Admission Notice.
  • You are required to observe all the instructions given to you by the Invigilators or officers responsible for the conduct of the examination.
  • You must comply with the instructions given in the rubric of the examination question paper.
  • All written answers, including rough work, must be done in the Answer Book supplied by the Examination Authority.
  • You may not bring into the examination room any notes, paper or other materials except those which have specifically been permitted in the examination by the examiners.
  • Cheating is an examination offence and may lead to exclusion from all future examinations of the University.
  • Please note that Examiners attach great importance to legibility, accuracy and clearness of expression.
  • Essays or other work written in your own time must be your own work, and any quotations from the published or unpublished works of other people must be acknowledged.
